The Buckland Bookcase
A wall-filling bookcase in solid pine, drawn for a long room that needed somewhere to put a lifetime of books. Two bays divided down the middle, a softly arched cornice, and a tongue-and-groove panelled back. Each side carries one fixed centre shelf and four fully adjustable shelves above and below — the spacing moves to suit whatever lives there, from paperbacks to atlases.
Too large to come through a doorway in one piece, so we machined and finished every part in the workshop, then carried it in flat and assembled it on site.
Things people often ask.
Can it be sized to my room?
Yes — every bookcase is drawn from the wall it'll live on. Wider, narrower, taller, shorter, more bays, fewer bays. We measure on site (or work from your dimensions if you're further afield) before any timber is cut.
How many shelves do I get?
For this build, ten in total — one fixed and four adjustable per side. We can add or remove shelves on a custom build; the case carries pin-holes for many more positions than there are shelves, so you've room to grow.
Will it fit through my front door?
That's why we build big bookcases the way we did this one — every part machined and finished in the workshop, then carried in flat and jointed up on site. If you can get a 2.1m plank through the door, we can get the bookcase in.
Does it need fixing to the wall?
For a piece this tall and broad, yes — we fit two discreet brackets into a stud or masonry. They don't show once books are on the shelves.
How long does it take?
Around 10–14 weeks from sign-off, depending on size. A fitting day is built into the back end of that for any bookcase that needs assembling on site.
Could I have it painted?
Yes — sea-glass, deep ocean, or any colour you mix to a sample. Painted bookcases take an extra fortnight for the finish to cure properly before delivery.
How do we look after it?
An annual re-oil keeps the pine fed; we send a tin along with the bookcase. Dust the shelves between books once in a while and it'll look good for decades.
