Pebbles and Pine Westward Ho! · Devon
The Workshop

Made slowly, a few minutes from the sea.

We've been making furniture by hand on the North Devon coast since 2012 — kitchens, dressers, beds, bookcases, bars. Most of it is drawn for one particular room and one particular family.

The L-shaped base of the Torridge Dresser stood in the workshop, with drawers and panelled cupboard doors fitted, before the plate dresser was added on top.
How we work

Honest pine, joined the old way.

Everything starts as solid, sustainably sourced pine. Frames are mortise-and-tenon, drawers are dovetailed, and there's no MDF anywhere. Each piece is oiled by hand so the grain stays visible — it's part of the piece, and it ages gently with the house around it.

What goes in

The same few rules, every time

Timber
Solid pine throughout, FSC sustainably sourced. No MDF, no veneered board.
Joints
Mortise-and-tenon frames and dovetailed drawer boxes — built to outlive us both.
Finish
Hand-oiled as standard. Waxed, or painted in sea-glass or deep ocean, if you'd rather.
Fit
Built-ins and kitchens are measured on site, then made for that room and nowhere else.

Pieces part-way through

Close-up of a drawer pulled from a bedside cabinet in the workshop, showing the hand-cut dovetail joints at the corners of the drawer box.
Dovetailed, the old way. Every drawer is a solid-pine box with dovetailed corners and a panelled bottom — the way a drawer used to be made, and the reason it'll still slide cleanly in forty years.
The two carcasses for a dresser part-built — drawer rails set into solid pine sides with tongue-and-groove panelled backs and a centre upright.
Drawer rails and pinned backs. Solid pine sides, tongue-and-groove panelled backs, and dovetailed drawer boxes running on hardwood rails — built the way a dresser used to be, with no MDF at all.
A single bedside cabinet stood in the workshop with both drawers closed, before oil, showing the chunky top, panelled sides and turned pine knobs.
Built one at a time. Each cabinet is built up from solid pine in the workshop, then oiled by hand once the joints are flush. Pairs leave the bench as pairs — checked side by side so the grain sits well between them.
A bookcase mid-build, fully assembled but with shelves not yet in, showing two bays divided by a centre upright.
Two bays, one piece. A central upright divides the bookcase into matching halves. Each side carries a fixed middle shelf — strength where the case needs it, neat symmetry where you see it.

How it usually goes

Every piece is different, but the shape of it rarely changes. No commitment until you've seen a drawing you love.

  1. Tell us the idea

Fill in a short brief or drop in for a chat. A rough idea is plenty — we'll work the rest out together.

  2. First thoughts

Within two working days we come back with first thoughts and a rough cost. Nothing's binding.

  3. Measure and draw

For built-ins and kitchens we measure on site, then draw it up with you until it's right.

  4. Make and deliver

We build it here in solid pine and oil it by hand, then deliver it — and fit it in place for built-ins and kitchens.

Got something in mind?

Tell us about it — we'll come back within two working days.
